Steps To Start A Book Blog

Think Of A Name For Your Blog:

You should begin by coming up with a name for your book blog.  This will be the name that appears in your website’s URL. You can choose your own name or come up with a unique one if you intend to write book reviews about books by familiar authors.

If you have a hard time coming up with a name, consider using your favorite book as inspiration. For example, “Reading Adventures of Alice.” If it’s taken, get creative! Try adding words like “Reviews,” “Books,” or “Literature” to the end of your chosen title.

Domain names can be purchased through a variety of websites. Try using a site like Hostinger or DreamHost to buy your domain name. These sites offer various domain names and hosting plans, making it easy to get started with your book blog.

(It’s always better to keep your domain name and hosting service separate because you won’t lose your domain name if you switch to another web hosting service).

Choose A Blogging Platform:

Once you have chosen a domain name, you will need to select a content management system (CMS). CMS is a software that runs your site (a.k.a., blogging platform). There are a variety of different blogging platforms to choose from, but WordPress is my top recommendation.

Over 42% of websites use WordPress as their blogging platform, and it’s easy to use and can be customized with thousands of themes or plugins.

WordPress has two products WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Choose WordPress.org to have complete control over your blog.

Select A Category For Your Book Blog:

It is also a good idea to decide on a category for your blog. There are thousands of different varieties of books, so it might be helpful to list out the ones you’re familiar with and narrow it down from there. By doing so, readers will be able to find your site more easily.

Here are a few examples:

  • Fantasy: A fantasy genre is a type of novel that contains magical and supernatural materials
  • Mystery: Mystery novels are focused on solving crimes or murder cases till the end of the story
  • Non-Fiction: Types of books that are focused on real people and events
  • Drama: These types of books focus on the story of fictional characters’ life events

Other Types:

  • History Books
  • Biography Books
  • Literature Books

If you have trouble selecting a genre for your book blog, consider what type of books you enjoy reading. If there’s nothing in particular that stands out to you, try Fiction or nonfiction, or create a one-category book blog.

Now that you have a name and category for your blog, it’s time to design it. Browse popular book blogs to learn how you can design your blog. There are plenty of great book blog designs available that can be used as inspiration (don’t copy them).

As you design your website, make sure that it is easy to navigate and matches the name and category of your blog. You may also want to include a banner or logo to help represent your site.

Please don’t rush the process of designing a blog, as you may end up changing its look again and again.

Launch Your Book Blog:

Once your website is designed, it’s time to launch your blog. All you need to do is log in with your username and password to start your brand-new book blog.

Creating a self-hosted book blog is not complicated; it requires some critical steps to get started.

Additional Tips To Help You Kick Start A Book Blog

Publish Some Posts:

As soon as your blog is up and running, you can start writing posts. Try to post at least once a week and make sure to include images, videos, and infographics whenever possible. This will help keep readers engaged and coming back for more.

Book Reviews: One of the best ways to keep your readers engaged is by giving book reviews. This will help promote new and upcoming authors and demonstrate your expertise in the field. You can review books from various vendors, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo.

Give Book Recommendations: Book recommendations are another great way to engage your readers. If you like, you can recommend books you’ve read recently or post about some of your favorite authors and their famous works.

Participating In Discussion: Participating in discussions with fellow book bloggers is another excellent way to encourage reader engagement. You can communicate through forums, social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, or even on comments sections of each others’ blogs.

Share List Of Your Favorite Books And Reading Sites: Why not share a list of your favorite book blogs with your readers? This can be a great way to introduce them to new sites and help promote other bloggers. Just make sure you only include blogs that you have read and enjoyed.

Additionally, you can add book reviews from other sites like Amazon or Goodreads to your page. Just make sure to check the terms of service from each site.

Set Up Social Media Accounts:

You should also set up your blog’s social media accounts. This will make it easy for readers to follow you on all their favorite sites like Pinterest and Twitter.

Here are some tips to help you get started on social media for your blog:

  • Mention the URL of where they can find you (i.e., website or blog)
  • Share some posts from your latest book review series
  • Include a book giveaway (see other book blog posts to learn how to hold a successful book giveaway)
  • Share some of your favorite quotes from the books you’ve read lately
  • Post about upcoming author events that you’ll be attending

Send Email To Your Audience:

Keep your audience informed with emails about good book sales opportunities once in a while. Inform your readers about upcoming book sales, events, giveaways, etc.

This will help build trust and relationships with your audience.

How To Make Money As A Book Blogger

Affiliate Marketing:

Another reason to start a book blog is that you can make money from it. By becoming an affiliate for various vendors, you will earn a commission from every sale that your referral makes. It’s as easy as adding links to your page and sharing them with friends or followers.

Note: Only recommend books you have read and give honest opinions about them

Make Money By Displaying Ads:

You can display ads on your site and earn money when your readers interact with them. Many ad networks offer competitive rates, so be sure to look around for what works best with your website.

Write Sponsorship Posts:

Writing sponsorship posts is another way to make money with your book blog. This means that you will write a post about a product or service and receive compensation from the company in return.

Usually, this type of arrangement requires that you include an affiliate link for the company so that they can track any sales that come from your blog post.
